Basket of Bread (1945) or Basket of Bread-Rather Death Than Shame is a painting by Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí. The painting depicts a single piece of bread sitting comfortably in a basket. The basket nears the edge of a table. Dalí gifted the painting to his wife, Gala. The painting resides in Figueres at the Dalí Theatre-Museum and belongs to the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí. The painting was painted and completed in 1945. The painting is not to be confused with Dalí's 1926 painting The Basket of Bread, created when he was 22 years old. In the earlier version, the bread represents a staple of life. In the 1945 painting, the bread is Eucharistic.
